Primary research

Primary research is fundamental to the business intelligence process at Scorpio Partnership, allowing us to elicit strategic information through our analysts’ industry knowledge and experience.

Our analysts cultivate personal contact with senior professionals at wealth management institutions and with HNW/UHNW individuals. They will not reveal the identity of contacts from a primary research project (or any other project) without the express permission of that individual, or share any specific strategic information with any third party where that information has been given in confidence.

Primary research projects may take two main forms.

Intermediary research

Research with wealth management market professionals, typically undertaken on behalf of a product or service supplier seeking to:

  • develop a new product or service for professional intermediaries or their clients
  • find a new market for an existing product or service
  • develop a product or service better than those of its direct competitors

Private client research

Research with UHNW/HNW individuals, who may be customers of the client or individuals identified by us to test the validity of a new product or service. Private client research projects are usually undertaken:

  • To test client satisfaction with an existing product or service
  • To gain client input into future marketing strategy
  • To gauge HNW/UHNW individuals’ demand for a product or service before launching the product to the market at large

Either type of primary research will go through the following rigorous methodology:

  • Step 1: Develop an issues guide, which sets out the main strategic theme of the project and ensures consistency of interviews
  • Step 2: Recruitment of interviewees (in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998)
  • Step 3: Interviews and field work
  • Step 4: Transcription of interviews (a possible deliverable)
  • Step 5: Analysis of transcriptions (usually a deliverable; often forms the basis for consulting and strategy recommendations)
  • Step 6: Key findings document (usually made available to the interviewees)
